Begun in 1930 on an idea of Giovacchino Forzano, the festival plays each July and August at the open-air Gran Teatro on Lake Massaciuccoli at Torre del Lago, a few hundred metres from the villa where Puccini lived for more than thirty years and where he is buried. The theatre holds about 3,200. Every edition programmes Puccini's operas, with concerts, recitals, exhibitions and dance around them; the sixty-fourth ran in 2018.
