Parma gave Italy Toscanini, and the region has kept his name attached to its orchestra ever since. The present Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini was constituted in 2002 as the continuation of the Orchestra dell'Emilia-Romagna Arturo Toscanini, formed in 1975 by the municipalities and provinces of the region, and it functions as Emilia-Romagna's symphonic orchestra, playing across Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Modena and Bologna. Its concert home is the Auditorium Paganini, which Renzo Piano cut out of a disused sugar refinery, keeping the long brick flanks and glazing both ends so that the park shows through behind the players. Since 2017 the orchestra has been based at the Centro di Produzione Musicale in the Parco della Musica beside it. Enrico Onofri has been principal conductor since 2020, following Alpesh Chauhan, Kazushi Ono and Francesco Lanzillotta, and the repertoire runs from historically informed Baroque to contemporary Italian work.
