Huguenots granted refuge in Brandenburg after 1685 built their Friedrichstadt church on what is now the Gendarmenmarkt between 1701 and 1705, Louis Cayart and Abraham Quesnay taking as their model the temple at Charenton that had been pulled down in France. Eighty years later Carl von Gontard raised the domed tower beside it — a separate structure in separate ownership, and the source of the popular name Französischer Dom. Wrecked in the Second World War and rebuilt between 1977 and 1981, the church again serves its French Reformed congregation and lends its nave to concerts.
