Work on the open-air theatre above Sankt Goarshausen began in 1932 and was taken over the following year by the Nazi state, which redesignated it a Thingstätte and gave the commission to the Frankfurt architect Hermann Senf; labour-service men finished it in 1939 and it opened with Wilhelm Tell that June. The bowl holds 4,300 seated and up to fourteen thousand standing. Schiller, Goethe and Shakespeare were staged there until 1968, rock concerts have followed since Genesis in 1976, and a private company has run it since 2010. Aida was mounted on the terraces in 2012.
