Sofia's independent classical catalogue is largely the work of a single house. Established in 1992, Gega New records and issues what a national label ought to: Bulgarian composers and Bulgarian performers first, then chamber and symphonic repertoire, opera, choral and liturgical singing, jazz, and field recordings of folk music gathered region by region. That folk series has carried village singing to listeners who will never hear it at its source. The house also gives young musicians their first discs, which is how a small catalogue renews itself.
