The Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu has accompanied Barcelona’s opera seasons since 1847. Its first symphonic concert was conducted by Marià Obiols, and its first opera was Donizetti’s Anna Bolena. Alongside the international operatic repertoire, the ensemble has maintained a particular commitment to Catalan music. Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky, Arturo Toscanini and Bruno Walter are among the musicians who have conducted it. Its work extends beyond the orchestra pit: in December 2017 it performed at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva for the Concert for Peace and Human Rights.
