Huelva's main stage opened on 30 August 1923 as the Real Teatro, a name Alfonso XIII had granted the year before; the mining engineer Joaquín Gonzalo Garrido promoted it on calle Vázquez López, and the municipal band played at the opening before María Gámez's company gave the Álvarez Quintero brothers' Cristalina. The Second Republic brought the present name in 1931. In April 1984 the provincial council and the city bought the building from its private owner and remodelled it, and it has been in public hands since.
