Guangzhou Opera House was completed in 2010 for the municipal government to a design by Zaha Hadid Architects. Located beside the Pearl River in Zhujiang New Town, the complex consists of two sculptural volumes inspired by river-worn rocks. The larger contains an auditorium designed for about 1,800 spectators; the smaller houses a 400-seat multifunctional space for varied performance arrangements. Folded circulation routes, foyers and public terraces connect the performance spaces with the riverside setting. The project combines operatic presentation with concerts and other performing arts.
