Zutphen's Buitensociëteit went up in 1891 to a design by D. Lijsen, built as a private club house on the edge of the old Hanseatic town. In 1944 the bombing of a German munitions train nearby wrecked it; restoration followed in 1947, and in 1977 L. Rienalda added the theatre that gave the complex its present name. Works in 1998–99 returned the coffered neoclassical ceiling of the concert hall, whose acoustics have long been admired. The hall seats 660 and takes concerts, drama, cabaret and the town's civic occasions.
