Haus Wittgenstein in Vienna was built in 1926–1928 for Margarete Stonborough-Wittgenstein. Paul Engelmann prepared the architectural scheme, while her brother Ludwig Wittgenstein became closely involved in its proportions, detailed design and construction supervision. After a proposed demolition was prevented, Bulgaria’s embassy acquired the house at the end of 1975. Renovation in 1976–1977 adapted it as the Bulgarian Cultural Institute, including a lecture hall in the lower level while retaining much of the original structure. The building subsequently became a venue for exhibitions and events in art, culture and philosophy. Ludwig Wittgenstein spent the late 1920s designing a house in Vienna's third district for his sister Margaret Stonborough, working alongside the architect Paul Engelmann and pursuing proportion with the exactness he brought to logic — door handles, radiators and window catches all drawn to his specification. Completed in 1928, stripped of ornament and later rescued from demolition, the building has belonged to Bulgaria since the 1970s and houses the Bulgarian Cultural Institute, whose exhibitions, lectures and chamber concerts fill its severe white rooms.
