The Hainburger Haydngesellschaft was founded in 1981 by Hans Marseille and a group of music enthusiasts in Hainburg, where Joseph Haydn received his first musical training. The society presents orchestral concerts, recitals, chamber music, opera galas and choral programmes, extending from Baroque repertoire to contemporary music and jazz. Concerts initially took place in the adapted dining hall of the tobacco factory, with acoustic improvements introduced in 1985. In September 2008 the series moved to the restored factory halls of the Kulturfabrik Hainburg. Radio and television recordings helped bring its earlier concerts to wider audiences. Founded in 1981 in the town where Joseph Haydn had his first music lessons between 1738 and 1740, the society mounts about eight concerts a year — orchestral programmes, chamber music, solo recitals, opera galas, choral evenings and music cabaret. Until 2008 these took place in a converted dining hall at the Hainburg tobacco factory; since September 2008 the Kulturfabrik has housed them. Its programme deliberately draws players from Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
