At Cuxhaven the Helgoland-Kai is the quay from which the ferries leave for Heligoland, out where the Elbe widens into the North Sea. Its open quayside and terminal buildings serve in summer as a setting for events on a large scale, opera in the open air among them, played with the harbour and the shipping lane at the performers' backs.
