Hutchins Concert Hall seats 1,435 — 835 in the orchestra, 600 in the balcony — under a fifty-foot ceiling whose gradual slope shapes the acoustic. It is the main room of the Collins Center for the Arts on the University of Maine campus at Orono, opened in 1986 as the Maine Center for the Arts to a design by the Bangor architect Eaton W. Tarbell; it closed for eighteen months in 2007 and was renamed on reopening in 2009. The Bangor Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1896, plays its season there.
