Berlin's Hasenheide had been pleasure ground since the 1860s when, in 1880, the innkeeper Rudolf Sternecker gave the site a name that a newspaper notice of that April preserved: Neue Welt. Attractions came and went — an Indian hall, fountains, a hippodrome, an early demonstration of electric railway traction. After 1900 a hall seating almost two thousand was added, and from 1966 the room began to accumulate rock concerts by the hundred. It closed in 1982, reopened in 1985 as a roller-skating disco, and settled into its present form around 1990 under the name Huxleys Neue Welt, taking audiences of up to 1,600 in Neukölln. Few Berlin buildings have changed their public quite so often while staying on the same corner.
