Once a year the Inselhalle fills with Nobel laureates. Lindau's congress building, on the island in the Bodensee, houses the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and the town's psychotherapy weeks, its divisible main hall of 1,100 seats and a dozen smaller rooms taking gatherings of up to two thousand people. It replaced a singing hall and a fire station that occupied the site until 1980. By the 2010s ageing plant and cramped capacity had raised the prospect of the meetings moving to Switzerland or Austria, and Bavaria answered with twenty-five million euros; the enlarged building reopened in 2018, with a car park beside it and a new square between the two named for Therese of Bavaria. Between congresses the hall turns to concerts and exhibitions.
