Vienna sustains a dense population of private music academies, masterclass institutes and summer courses. Most are small; most conclude a fortnight of teaching with a public concert in a hired hall, and their traces are correspondingly thin. Institutions of that kind leave little behind them except their students, who carry the teaching on into other cities — which is, on any honest reckoning, the point of them.
