Kaleto — "the fortress" — is a name that recurs across Bulgaria wherever an old stronghold stood, and open-air amphitheatres built on such sites give provincial companies their summer stages. Ruse, the Danube city with an opera company of its own, turns outdoors in July and August for staged performances that the season and the audience numbers make impractical indoors. Verdi's "Il trovatore" has been among the works heard on such a stage.
