Weeks before his death in 1828, Franz Schubert came to this church in Hernals to hear the Latin Requiem of his brother Ferdinand — the last music, by long tradition, that he heard at all. A plaque has recorded the visit since 1928. The building itself grew out of a pilgrimage: a Holy Sepulchre church of 1639, a Calvary of stepped chapels completed in 1717, and fourteen baroque Passion reliefs that Richard Jordan folded into the walls when he rebuilt the church between 1889 and 1894. Hans Petermair repaired the war damage, and worship resumed at Easter 1948. It remains the parish church of Vienna's seventeenth district, and music is still made under its vaults.
