The town of Gießen went abroad for its civic hall and gave the commission to the Swedish architect Sven Markelius; building began in 1962 and the halle on the Berliner Platz opened in March 1966, a group of flat-roofed cubes around a courtyard, with Markelius designing the lighting and furniture as well. The large hall holds about 2,000, and there are five conference rooms besides. It stands on the site of the Liberal Synagogue destroyed in November 1938, whose foundations came to light in 2023.
