Opened in 1996 next to the main station, to a design by Dietrich Bangert, the Konzerthaus was for years the most contested building project in postwar Freiburg. The Rolf-Böhme-Saal is laid out like a nave, forty-seven metres by nineteen, holding up to 1,744; its floor rises and falls on spiral jacks and its side galleries fold upward on winches, so the same room takes a symphony concert, a congress or a banquet. A round hall above it seats 350. The SWR orchestra was based here until 2016.
