Built between 1898 and 1900 to plans by Leopold Theyer, the house was opened by the Carinthian savings bank as a Musiksaalgebäude and given over to the Musikverein Kärnten. Bombing in 1944 left only one hall standing; the rebuilding was finished in 1951 and the house reopened in 1952 with a concert by the Vienna Philharmonic. It is run by the province of Carinthia, carries the state conservatory in an attic storey added in 1994–95, and serves as the home room of the Kärntner Sinfonieorchester.
