Tobacco was worked on this site from 1724, the Danube carrying leaf upriver to a manufactory that the state took over in 1784 and that employed some 2,500 people by 1905; the great Donaugebäude went up in 1847. Production stopped for good in 1992. Lower Austria bought the complex in 2005 and rebuilt it as the Kulturfabrik, keeping the industrial bones — the 700-square-metre former factory hall now takes exhibitions, and part of the building houses the archaeological depot for finds from Roman Carnuntum nearby. Concerts and staged events use the rooms as well; Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf has been given here, in the town where the young Haydn was sent to learn music.
