High under the Watzmann, Berchtesgaden built its spa and congress house to serve the visitors who come for the mountains and the salt mine. Berchtesgaden's former Kur- und Kongresshaus is now presented as AlpenCongress, a conference and cultural centre on Maximilianstraße. The Großer Saal covers 800 square metres and offers 748 places in row seating, with other arrangements for banquets and conferences; standing concerts can accommodate up to 1,500. The building combines performance halls, conference rooms, exhibition space and a separate cinema of 165 seats, with a configurable stage and artists' dressing rooms.
