Norwegian immigrants founded Luther College at Decorah in 1861 as a Lutheran seminary, and music has been close to its centre ever since. Weston Noble, a graduate of the class of 1943, conducted its ensembles for fifty-seven years from 1948, taking the Nordic Choir to Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center and across Scandinavia; the annual "Christmas at Luther" is broadcast across the United States. The Center for Faith and Life is the college's principal performing space, and the campus also holds Vesterheim, the largest American museum devoted to a single immigrant group. Verdi's Rigoletto has been performed there.
