Choral singing in the Bulgarian provinces has generally been amateur, civic and durable, sustained by the community reading-house tradition rather than by conservatoires. The mixed choir of Vidin, the Danube town at Bulgaria's north-western corner, belongs to that line: townspeople who sing together, drawing on sacred and folk-derived repertoire and joining orchestral forces when a large work requires a chorus.
