Lyubomir Pipkov (1904–1974) was among the composers who gave twentieth-century Bulgarian music its idiom, drawing on the asymmetric rhythms of the country's folk song for symphonies, operas and choral works, and running the National Opera in Sofia for part of his career. The specialist music school in Sofia carries his name, and its concert hall is where its pupils are first heard in public. Student orchestras, chamber groups and choirs use it.
