Katowice put its concert hall on the ground of a closed coal mine and made no secret of the fact — the brick-clad building opened in 2014 answers the city's industrial fabric from the outside, while within, Nagata Acoustics shaped an auditorium whose sound has been the making of its reputation. It houses the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble founded before the war by Grzegorz Fitelberg and re-established in Katowice after it, which had spent decades in premises inadequate to its standing. A chamber hall, studios and a garden complete the complex, and the building has drawn to Silesia the touring orchestras that once went only to Warsaw and Kraków.
