Orquestra do Norte was established in 1992 by Associação Norte Cultural through Portugal's programme for regional orchestras. Based in Amarante, it developed a touring model intended to bring professional orchestral music to communities across northern Portugal. José Ferreira Lobo was its founding artistic leader. Its activity encompasses symphonic concerts, opera, ballet and educational work, with repertoire extending from the established orchestral canon to contemporary and Portuguese music. Performances in towns such as Fafe belong to this regional circuit rather than indicating a separate resident orchestra.
