Opened on 2 October 1964 as the Stadsschouwburg Eindhoven, to a design by Cees Geenen and Leo Oskam, the house took its present name in January 2007 after a rebuild that added the Philipszaal to the renovated main auditorium. It stands beside the Stadswandelpark, just south of the centre, and belongs to the city, which listed it as a municipal monument in 2016. The Hertog Jan Zaal holds up to 950 and the Philipszaal 520. Touring opera and choral-orchestral programmes reach Eindhoven through it, as Carmen and the Orff double bill did in the autumn of 2011.
