The Pazardzhik Symphony Orchestra was established in 1969 to provide the city with a professional ensemble for symphonic programmes and support its existing amateur operetta theatre. Its early work included preparations for the operetta Roses from the Balkans. The first regular concert took place on 25 November 1969, conducted by Vladimir Nedkov with pianist Krasimir Gatev. The all-Beethoven programme comprised the Coriolan Overture, the Fifth Piano Concerto and the Fifth Symphony. The orchestra's origins therefore connect the city's operetta tradition with the development of a regular symphonic concert life. Among the municipal symphony orchestras that Bulgaria maintained through the twentieth century and has largely kept since, the Pazardzhik ensemble serves a town of modest size on the Maritsa with a full concert calendar. Its year is shaped by the civic anniversaries that matter locally — the September commemoration of the Unification of Bulgaria brings a festive programme — and by its own winter series of music days. It plays in the town's cultural centre and draws its audience from the surrounding Thracian plain.
