The Performing Arts Center at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi opened in April 2005 with a gala performance by the Tejano singer Freddy Fender. The university venue subsequently welcomed artists including Van Cliburn, Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell and Frederica von Stade. Its H-E-B Performance Hall supports faculty recitals, visiting performers and educational events. By combining university presentations with appearances by professional artists, the centre provides a shared performance setting for the campus and the wider Corpus Christi community. On the Texas Gulf coast, this centre serves a city better known for its bay and its port than for a concert circuit. It works as a receiving house: touring orchestras, recitals and staged productions arrive for a night or two and move on again. Symphonic programmes have been among the offerings, though the university town's own students and faculty supply much of the year's music.
