The square in front of the town hall is the open-air stage of Frankenthal's centre: the weekly market stands here, and it is one of the places the town puts a stage when the programme moves outdoors. The largest of those occasions is the Strohhutfest, running since 1973 and now the biggest street festival in the Palatinate — four days at the turn of May and June, six stages, some fifty bands and up to 250,000 visitors, organised by the town administration itself.
