The square before the town hall of Bruneck — Brunico, in the German-speaking Puster valley of South Tyrol — becomes a theatre in summer, when a stage goes up and the audience sits with the mountains behind it. Open-air opera has been given there: Carmen and Nabucco, the sort of titles that carry across a market square, with choruses broad enough to fill it.
