Pleven's Regional History Museum grew from the archaeological society founded in the city in 1903, whose early collection included finds from the Storgozia fortress. First displayed at the Saglasie cultural centre in 1923, the collection became an independent museum in 1953. Since 1984 it has occupied a former military building dating from 1888, with galleries and an outdoor exhibition in its park. Its holdings encompass archaeology, regional history and natural history. A permanent exhibition devoted to soprano Ghena Dimitrova brings photographs and stage costumes into a setting recalling the opera houses in which she performed. A two-storey building raised in 1888 on Stoyan Zaimov Street for the needs of the army houses the Regional History Museum in Pleven, some 7000 square metres of floor, with an open-air display set in 37 decares of park.
