Built between 1993 and 1995 in a Taunus village of no theatrical tradition whatever, the Rhein-Main-Theater existed at first for a single title: the German-language premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard, given on 7 December 1995 with Uwe Kröger and Helen Schneider, and attended by the composer. Nearly 1,570 seats were built, a hotel was attached, and the Ländchesbahn was given a 200-metre platform said to be the world's first railway station raised for a theatre alone; it lasted from 1996 to 1998, as did the run — 992 performances before the houses thinned.
Afterwards the building lived on touring work, Aida in 2006, Sister Act in 2017, concerts and galas between. Operations stopped during the pandemic, and in 2022 the owner announced plans to clear the site for housing and commercial use.
