Built between 1965 and 1968 on the Rhine bank, on the site where the old Stadthalle stood until February 1945, the hall was designed by the Mainz architect Heinz Laubach and inaugurated on 9 November 1968. It forms one block with the city hall and the Hilton, was enlarged in 2006–07 by the Danish practice Dissing+Weitling, and has been managed since 2012 by the municipal company mainzplus. Carnival sittings, party conferences, trade events and concerts share the calendar; a roof fire in May 2019 closed the building until January 2022.
