Schaeffer Auditorium at Kutztown University was constructed in 1938 and named after Nathan Schaeffer, the institution's president from 1877 to 1893. Its main theatre seats 800 and accommodates music, dance and drama. The building also contains teaching rooms, a smaller performance space and a costume shop, combining public presentation with practical student training. A major renovation programme began in March 2012. Through this combination of auditorium and instructional facilities, Schaeffer serves both visiting performers and the university's own artistic work. Built in 1938 on the Kutztown campus and named for Nathan Schaeffer, who led the institution from 1877 to 1893, the auditorium seats 800. A smaller second theatre, music classrooms and a costume shop share the building. Student music, dance and theatre run there alongside KU Presents!, the university's professional touring series, and the house was closed for a renovation begun in March 2012. The school itself opened in 1866 as the Keystone State Normal School.
