From the tower at its centre thirty-two avenues radiate like the ribs of a fan. The palace came first, founded in 1715 by Margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach, and the city was drawn outwards from it — a piece of geometry visible from the air to this day. Air raids in 1944 burnt the building out; reconstruction behind the old façades gave it to the Badisches Landesmuseum. The lawns of the Schlossgarten, stretching from the terrace towards the woods, take audiences of a size no room indoors could seat.
