Laid out from 1825 under Duke Ernst I and finished by 1849, with Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Peter Joseph Lenné both involved, the square is the forecourt of Schloss Ehrenburg and the widest open space in the old residence town of Coburg. The Landestheater of 1837–40 closes it to the north, the arcades of 1843 to the east; in the middle stands Ernst I in bronze, cast from two French cannon and unveiled in August 1849. Garrison parades filled it until 1914. It now serves as evening parking for theatre-goers and as the town's open-air concert ground.
