Peter Paul Rubens was born in Siegen in 1577, during his family's exile there, and the Upper Castle above the Schlossplatz now keeps a room of his paintings within the Siegerlandmuseum. The square in front looks out over a town largely rebuilt after the raids of 1944, with the Nassau princes' Lower Castle below and the wooded ridges of the Siegerland beyond. Concerts are given on the square itself in summer, the castle standing at the players' backs.
