Hoorn has had three theatres of this name: the Parkzaal at the Achterom by A.C. Bleijs from 1876, a house on the Westerdijk by H.M. Koldewey from 1969, and the present building at the Hoornse Hop. Its design was put to a public vote in May 1997, which Max van Huut won with 2,439 of 2,973 ballots cast. The stage tower collapsed during construction in April 2001; Queen Beatrix opened the finished theatre on 25 June 2004. The Hamlet hall seats 920, the Othello hall 250.
