Shangyin Opera House was completed in 2019 for the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, to designs by Christian de Portzamparc with Tongji Architectural Design. At the junction of Fenyang and Huaihai roads, its exterior is divided into pavilion-like volumes to relate to the surrounding buildings. The 1,200-seat auditorium has a U-shaped layout and is complemented by four rehearsal rooms. The complex combines a public performance venue with a teaching facility, enabling conservatory students and staff to work in professional stage conditions. Opened on 15 September 2019 at the corner of Huaihai Middle Road and Fenyang Road, the house stands on the campus of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and belongs to it. Christian de Portzamparc's practice designed it with Tongji University's architectural institute; behind the 1,200-seat auditorium lie four rehearsal halls, for opera, orchestra, chorus and Chinese instruments. Conservatory productions share it with visiting companies and competitions.
