The Sofia Boys' Choir was founded in 1968 by Lilyana Todorova at the community centre now named Tsar Boris III. Adriana Blagoeva led the ensemble from 1989 until January 2025, and a youth choir was added in 1997, allowing singers to continue after their voices changed. Alexander Mitev took over the leadership in February 2025. The repertoire extends from early sacred music and Church Slavonic works to Bulgarian folk arrangements and contemporary compositions. The choir gives independent concerts and has participated in productions with the Sofia Philharmonic, Sofia Opera and Bulgarian National Radio. Its combined boys' and youth sections provide successive stages of choral training within one institution. Trained voices that break with adolescence make a boys' choir a permanently renewing body, and Sofia's has supplied the capital with that particular sound: the treble line for operatic productions requiring it, sacred repertoire, and concert programmes of its own. Singers pass through, learn to read and to blend, and leave; the ensemble remains. Choral schooling of this kind lies at the root of a Bulgarian vocal tradition better known abroad through the country's great opera singers.
