Leiden's Stadsgehoorzaal was built in 1890-91 to designs by the municipal architect Daniel Elisa Cornelis Knuttel. It replaced an earlier concert hall destroyed by fire in 1889. The richly decorated building combines Neo-Renaissance architecture with elements of Mannerism and Baroque design; its principal frontage stands on the Breestraat, with a rear elevation towards the Aalmarkt and the Rhine. The hall forms part of Leiden's protected historic townscape and preserves a substantial example of Knuttel's public architecture.
