On 30 September 1918 the house on the Wilsonsplein opened with De Heks van Haarlem, a play Frederik van Eeden wrote for the occasion. It replaced an 1849 theatre on the Jansweg and was paid for by J. Krol, a rentier whose fortune came from tobacco plantations in the Dutch East Indies; at the time his gift was anonymous. J.A.G. van der Steur designed it in the Dutch variant of neo-renaissance and it is a rijksmonument. Closed in 2003, it reopened in 2008 after Erick van Egeraat's enlargement.
