Stara Zagora has had an opera since 1 July 1925, when Gergana was staged there; it was the first provincial opera in Bulgaria, and the municipality has stood behind the house ever since, paying a large share of the rebuilding after the 1991 fire, completed in 2010. The town's Festival of Opera and Ballet Art goes back to the late autumn of 1967, when it started as December Music Days, and has passed its fiftieth edition. The municipality also issues a weekly cultural poster and brings in visiting orchestras.
