The Teatro Auditorio Buero Vallejo is a municipal performing-arts venue in Guadalajara, Spain, named after the playwright born in the city. Built between 1998 and 2002, it opened on 20 December 2002 with Rafael Amargo's Poeta en Nueva York. The complex was designed by Luis Rojo de Castro, Begoña Fernández-Shaw Zulueta and Ángel Verdasco Novalvos. Its main auditorium was designed for 1,003 spectators, with an orchestra pit, while the smaller Sala Tragaluz accommodates 133. Exhibition and ancillary spaces support a programme of theatre, dance and music. Antonio Buero Vallejo was born in Guadalajara in 1916 and became the most performed Spanish dramatist of his century; the city's theatre-auditorium carries his name. It is the principal indoor stage of a provincial capital barely an hour from Madrid, taking touring drama, dance, zarzuela and opera as well as orchestral concerts and the ordinary civic business of a municipal house. Its season is built for a public that could easily go elsewhere, and mostly does not.
