Bilbao's Teatro Campos Eliseos opened in 1902 and was designed by Alfredo Acebal and Jean Batiste Darroquy. Darroquy was responsible for the decorated Art Nouveau facade, whose horseshoe arch incorporates plant motifs and fantastic animals. After nearly twenty years of inactivity, the theatre reopened in March 2010 following a comprehensive restoration. The renewed building occupies seven floors and more than 7,000 square metres, retaining a historic exterior within a substantially modernised performing-arts complex.
