Grosseto's theatre began as a salon put up early in the nineteenth century by the local Accademia degli Industri, whose name it still bears. Enlarged to the engineer Giacomo Passerini's design, it was inaugurated as the Teatro Regio on 3 January 1819, seating some five hundred; the Sienese architect Augusto Corbi rebuilt it between 1888 and 1892 as a horseshoe for eight hundred. The Maremma flood of 1966 did severe damage. Restoration followed in 1989–90 and the house returned to use in 1997, now a protected national monument. Among the events it carries is the Scriabin International Piano Competition, which brings young pianists to Grosseto for its closing rounds.
