Toledo's municipal theatre occupies the ground of the Mesón de la Fruta, the old corral de comedias dismantled from 1866 to make way for it. It opened on 19 October 1879 with "Del Rey abajo, ninguno" by Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla, the Toledan dramatist whose name it carries. The design passed through more than one hand: Luis Antonio Fenech drew the first scheme, and Ramiro Amador de los Ríos widened the stairs, opened out the horseshoe of the auditorium and improved its ventilation. Overhead, Thalia presides among medallions of Tirso de Molina and Calderón de la Barca; iron columns, painted proscenium and a decorated drop curtain place the house squarely among the better Spanish municipal theatres of its century. Drama, dance, concerts and opera fill its calendar still.
